It offers young people the chance to develop their sporting skills, improve their fitness, build independence and become part of a team.

Just as importantly, it creates opportunities to form friendships and connect with other young people who share similar experiences.

The club has already made a positive difference to its members and their families. Eleven-year-old player Sophie Greham describes the Steelers as a place where everyone supports one another and feels part of one big family. Her father, David, has also spoken about the benefits the sport has brought to Sophie’s confidence, determination and independence.

Training in Moate

The Shannonside Steelers train every Tuesday evening from 6:15pm to 7:45pm at Moate Sports & Recreation Centre.

Children aged five and over with physical disabilities who are interested in trying wheelchair basketball are encouraged to get in touch. Whether a young person is already interested in sport or simply looking for a new activity, the club offers an opportunity to learn, participate and have fun as part of a team.

How to Get Involved

Parents and guardians who would like to find out more about joining the Shannonside Steelers can contact local volunteer David on 085 834 4889.

Further information and registration details are also available through the Irish Wheelchair Association’s sports website: www.iwa.ie/sport/join.

Wheelchair basketball is helping young people across the Midlands discover what they can achieve through sport. For families in and around Moate and Athlone, the Shannonside Steelers offer a chance to get involved, make connections and be part of something special.

Shannonside Steelers Call on Young People to Get Involved in Wheelchair Basketball An exciting opportunity for children with physical disabilities to get active, build confidence and make friends right here in Moate.
