Shannonside Steelers Call on Young People to Get Involved in Wheelchair Basketball
An exciting opportunity for children with physical disabilities to get active, build confidence and make friends right here in Moate.
Children aged five and over with physical disabilities are being encouraged to discover the excitement of wheelchair basketball, as the Shannonside Steelers launch a recruitment drive for new members ahead of the winter season.
Based in Moate Sports & Recreation Centre in Co. Westmeath, the Shannonside Steelers provide young people with an opportunity to experience the thrill of team sport in a welcoming and supportive environment.
More Than Just Basketball
Wheelchair basketball is about much more than scoring baskets. It offers young people the chance to develop their sporting skills, improve their fitness, build independence and become part of a team.
Just as importantly, it creates opportunities to form friendships and connect with other young people who share similar experiences.
The club has already made a positive difference to its members and their families. Eleven-year-old player Sophie Greham describes the Steelers as a place where everyone supports one another and feels part of one big family. Her father, David, has also spoken about the benefits the sport has brought to Sophie’s confidence, determination and independence.
Training in Moate
The Shannonside Steelers train every Tuesday evening from 6:15pm to 7:45pm at Moate Sports & Recreation Centre.
Children aged five and over with physical disabilities who are interested in trying wheelchair basketball are encouraged to get in touch. Whether a young person is already interested in sport or simply looking for a new activity, the club offers an opportunity to learn, participate and have fun as part of a team.
